SUBMIT YOUR PROPOSALS FOR THE 2022 ASAA CONFERENCE!!

Paper Proposal Deadline: August 30, 2021

The next African Studies Association of Africa (ASAA) conference will be hosted by the Institute for Humanities in Africa (HUMA) at the University of Cape Town from 11-16 April, 2022. The theme of the conference is “Africa and the Human: Old Questions, New Imaginaries”. In a world where a Black Lives Matter movements are still critically important, and the living conditions and deaths of Black people in many parts of the world continue to be debated, the theme of the conference brings alive the question of what it means to be “human” in the 21st century, given histories of treatment as not “being human”. The conference call for individual abstracts is still open, with a deadline of August 30, 2021. Please see here for the call.

The African Studies Association of Africa (ASAA) was founded in 2013 to promote the contributions of African scholars to the advancement of knowledge about the peoples and cultures of Africa and the Diaspora. The ASAA is dedicated to the study of Africa from an Africanist perspective, what Kwame Nkrumah, the first president of Ghana, referred to as studying our societies and experiences in an African-centered way.

The ASAA’s goals are to:

  1. Promote and support networking and interdisciplinary exchanges among Africanist scholars, centers and institutes of African Studies on the continent.
  2. Promote research and discussions on topical issues of concern to the wellbeing of Africans.
  3. Promote and encourage research by African scholars on the continent.
  4. Promote and encourage Africa-centered education – an informed understanding of Africa through museums, archives, schools, policymakers, NGOs, media, business, learned societies, and other interested communities.
  5. Promote links with Africans and institutions in Africa and the Diaspora involved and interested in African Studies.
  6. Encourage partnerships with existing Associations of African Studies and other organizations interested in promoting African affairs.

As part of efforts to fulfill these goals, the ASAA has organized three international conferences so far in its history: at the University of Ibadan in 2015; University of Ghana in 2017; and United States International University, Nairobi in 2019. The 2022 conference will be its fourth international conference.

The CIHA blog is proud to have been a part of all three past ASAA conferences, through pre-conference workshops and panels. Once again, we look forward to being a part of the next conference.
