  • A comparative assessment of local populations living at fully demarcated borders versus non-demarcated borders:

2. AU-RECs framework on cross-border cooperation

  • What are the existing models and policies of African RECs on border management: a comparison of adopted policies on border management with a focus on 2 or 3 RECs
  • How can the AU Convention on Cross-Border Cooperation and its implementation be synergised with RECs policies? (Concrete cases / scenarios)
  • Do approaches to border management at AU and RECs level compete or coincide and what lessons can be learnt for the creation of sustainable synergies?
  • What is the existing infrastructure between the AUBP and at the RECs regarding early warning and response/mediation mechanisms (e.g. in the cases of border conflicts, Ebola, trans-nationalisation of terrorism)?

3. Gender mainstreaming Empowerment:

  • Are political declarations and decisions on border management issues gender sensitive?
  • Are women included in border management activities and policies and how can their participation be promoted and increased of in the development and implementation of polices on border issues?
  • Are women included in border conflict management and resolution and are their needs integrated in peace negotiations, e.g. in the case of Sudan and South Sudan?
  • What impacts do delimitation and demarcation have on women and their daily business in border regions? Case study
