Job Opportunity: Senior Researcher and Project Leader, Institute for Security Studies, Pretoria, South Africa

The Institute for Security Studies (ISS) is a pan-African applied policy research institute headquartered in Pretoria, South Africa with offices in Cape Town, South Africa, Nairobi, Kenya, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and Dakar, Senegal. The ISS is an established think tank working in the area of African human security. It seeks to mainstream human security perspectives into public policy processes and to influence decision makers within Africa and beyond. The objective of the Institute is to add critical balance and objectivity by providing timely, empirical research and contextual analysis of relevant human security issues to policy makers, area specialists, advocacy groups, and the media.

The ISS seeks to appoint a Senior Researcher and Project Leader – Long Term Forecasting of Africa, based in Pretoria.

The successful candidate will lead a small team within the Institute for Security Studies that focuses on forecasting and scenario-development of the long-term future of Africa and its member countries. The project is a partnership with the Frederick S. Pardee Center for International Futures, Josef Korbel School of International Studies, University of Denver and the candidate will be expected, over time, to master and use the associated International Futures software system.

Using the IFs model the project will undertake analysis of previous trends, current developments and future developments in agriculture, demographics, economics, education, energy, environment, health, climate change and socio-political characteristics and sectors. The incumbent will be responsible for all aspects of project management at the Institute, engage at senior with regional organisations, conduct desktop and primary research, manage commissioned researchers, facilitate meetings, manage the associated website and general activities as well as assist in developing new project proposals including fundraising.

This is a hugely exciting project with considerable scope for future development of opportunities at a time of a changing global environment.

NYU Wagner Public Service Fellowships for African Women

Wagner announces a call for applications for the African Women Public Service Fellowship, a fellowship program made possible by a donation from the Oprah Winfrey Foundation, which expands the opportunity for African women to prepare for public service in their home countries. As fellows at NYU Wagner, African women study in one of two graduate programs: the two-year Master of Public Administration or the one-year Executive MPA: Concentration on International Public Service Organizations. The awards for either program will support tuition, housing, travel to and from the United States and a small stipend to cover books and miscellaneous expenses. Applicants commit to return to their respective home countries at the conclusion of the program with the goal of assuming a leadership position on the continent where they can meaningfully contribute to the challenges currently confronting Africa.

Who Should Apply

To qualify for the Fellowship, prospective applicants must meet the general admissions criteria stipulated here and be citizens and resident in an African country at the time of application. NYU Wagner’s admissions committee pays particular attention to applications from women who possess strong academic records; who have a demonstrated commitment to public service; and for whom a Wagner education would significantly enhance their ability to have a deep and lasting impact on public service issues in their home country and region. Margaret McNamara Fund for Women from Select Developing Countries (who are already studying in the US or Canada)

The MMMF provides grants to women from developing countries to help further their education and strengthen their leadership skills to improve the lives of women and children in developing countries.

Presently, the grants are geared to students of accredited institutions in the US and Canada as well as the Universities of Cape Town, Pretoria, Stellenbosch and Witwatersrand.

For students from developing countries who are currently studying in the United States or Canada, the MMMF awards grants of approximately $12,000 each; grants are not renewable. The MMMF also typically invites the recipients to Washington DC to participate in a three day Awards Program organized in their honor.

A woman is eligible to apply for an MMMF grant if she meets all the following criteria:

has a record of service to women and children and a commitment to improve the lives of women and children in developing countries

resides in the U.S. or Canada at the time she submits the application

is enrolled (in residence) at an accredited U.S. or Canadian educational institution for the academic year 2011-2012, and intends to be enrolled for the 2012-2013 academic year

will use the grant toward the completion of her degree

is a national of a lower or middle income developing member country, as designated by the MMMF Country Eligibility List

is not a U.S. or Canadian citizen, permanent U.S. resident or Canadian Landed Immigrant

intends to return to her country (or other developing country) within two years of completing use of the MMMF grant and perform at least two years of service

demonstrates financial need and satisfactory academic performance

is at least 25 years old by December 31, 2011

is not related to a World Bank Group staff member or his/her spouse

There are no exceptions to the MMMF educational grant criteria listed above.

Applications for 2013/2014 will open October 15, 2012.
