MOSAIC Training Coordinator – MenCare+

MOSAIC is a well-known organisation in Cape Town that delivers an array of programmes and support services to victims of domestic and sexual violence. MOSAIC seeks to appoint a Training Coordinator for the MenCare+ Programme, based in Mitchells Plain, Cape Town. The Training Coordinator will report to the MenCare+ Programme Manager and will be responsible for the effective planning and facilitation of training workshops.

Requirements include Bachelor of Social Science or equivalent, clear understanding of the role of men in the field of gender-based-violence and ability to debate the issues, minimum of three years’ experience in a training and facilitation role in an NGO environment, experience in developing and designing workshop materials and content, advanced computer skills.

Amnesty International Country Campaigner – Sudan and South Sudan

Our South Sudan and Sudan Campaigner will tackle issues like protection of civilians in armed conflict, criminal justice reform, and freedom of expression and association. As a Campaigner, you can expect to have a direct impact on these key areas, as well as on our overarching regional campaigning and research strategies. Focusing mainly on South Sudan and Sudan you’ll develop effective, strategic campaigning plans and work with both AI colleagues and external partners to deliver them.

A practised campaigner, you’ll know how to create successful campaign strategies and build awareness through powerful actions and recognized techniques. We’ll expect you to understand human rights and the political landscape within the East and Horn of Africa, both in general terms and specifically, with knowledge of South Sudan and Sudan and key thematic areas. You’ll be able to translate that knowledge into campaign materials and creative initiatives that inspire activism online and off, and have the fluency to express complex ideas in English and Arabic. You’ll have a network of civil society and government contacts and the clout to represent AI to audiences ranging from civil society groups and governments to our global membership.

Our Sudan Researcher will tackle issues like freedom of expression and association, human rights abuses in armed conflict and international justice. In order to get the word out about these violations, we need expertly developed research and campaigning strategies. And in this key role, that’s exactly what you’ll deliver. Your work will primarily focus on Sudan and thematic areas. As well as developing specific research projects and strategies, you’ll lead our monitor, research and investigations into human rights developments yourself – both at your desk and in the field. Ready to lead assessments of crisis situations and able to prepare thorough security assessments and political briefings, you’ll work as part of a team to make sure our hub research function is as flexible as it is effective.

A tried-and-tested human rights researcher, you’ll have specialist knowledge of Sudan and thematic areas, plus a well-developed understanding of human rights issues and the political landscape in the sub-region. You’ll have proven your ability to write and adapt research materials for a range of audiences too, and be confident communicating AI’s message externally, both in English and Arabic. Amnesty International Nigeria Director

The Amnesty International Nigeria Director is responsible for developing, coordinating and implementing strategies, operational plans and budgets for the work of Amnesty International Nigeria, towards the establishment and development of an effective AI presence in the country. For the first year the role will be heavily focused on establishing the office and its functions and recruitment of staff. Once established the Director will be accountable for management of staff, resources, office and operations of AI Nigeria ensuring the application of AI policy and quality standards across the operations throughout the office and provide political advice for AI’s work on Nigeria. Externally the Director will be responsible for building national relationships and Amnesty International’s profile in Nigeria and within the Amnesty International movement. The Director will represent AI at a senior level with the Nigerian government and others.

With a proven longstanding commitment to human rights and demonstrable knowledge of political, economic and social trends in Nigeria, you possess a deep understanding of challenges of developing activist organizations and the civil society landscape in Nigeria. You have a strong track record of senior level leadership and management success, preferably in an international organization, and experience of effectively lobbying governments and intergovernmental agents for policy change. Exemplary oral and written communication skills, and fluency in English are essential for success in this role.

Amnesty International Research, Campaigns and Communications Assistant – West Africa

Based in Dakar, you’ll support the West and Central Africa teams as they develop and roll out research, campaigning, communication and growth strategies. That means maintaining a broad overview of relevant political and human rights developments in the region; liaising with national and local contacts and monitoring media updates and internet searches to keep team members and other regional offices up to date. You’ll also take charge of the admin – everything from planning field research missions and making travel arrangements, to scheduling meetings and drafting and producing vital documents.

Thanks to similar experience in a similar professional environment, you’ll have no problem prioritising and coordinating multiple projects with minimal supervision. A clear, articulate communicator, you’ll have a high standard of English and French, Spanish or Portuguese. You’ll need excellent administrative, secretarial and IT skills as well as plenty of initiative and a proactive approach to problem solving. You’ll show agility and resilience when dealing with multiple priorities, crucially backed up by your organisation skills and sound knowledge of human rights issues in the region. You will also be able to produce accurate budget reports. Campaigns and/or research experience is desirable.

Amnesty International Translation Production Coordinator – West Africa

This is a brand new role resulting from decentralisation of our translation and production services. Working as part of an integrated international team, you’ll have real scope for creative input at a local level. In particular, you will assess how to adapt content both visually and verbally for a regional audience. Handling translation requests, mostly for French and Arabic, you’ll work with a team of in-house translators, as well as third-party suppliers. You will also co-ordinate the production of related materials such as reports and leaflets.

Although this is a co-ordination rather than translation role, you will need fluent French and ideally some knowledge of Arabic. You’ll be used to working with printers and other creative services, while editorial experience would be a plus – in particular collaborating with designers on visual adaptations. You will apply your understanding of good design to ensure that work is fully aligned to the regional needs. You’re likely to have experience of working in Africa, ideally already living in Dakar, and will be confident about building good working relationships with local suppliers.

The Country Director will be responsible for leading the in-country Spark staff, managing and delivering Spark’s vision and strategy within the country through delivering quality programs. HEKIMA Institute of Peace Studies and International Relations Accredited Certificate Course in Conflict Resolution, Peacebuilding & Reconciliation

Hekima Institute of Peace Studies and International Relations (HIPSIR) is a Jesuit university institution that offers MA degrees and certificate courses in peace studies and international relations. HIPSIR is part of Hekima College, a constituent college of the Catholic University of Eastern Africa.

This certificate course will enable participants acquire knowledge on conflict resolution, peacebuilding and reconciliation mechanisms and equip them with practical tools for social change. Subjects to be covered include conflict and peacebuilding theories; conflict resolution mechanisms; historical analysis of the African conflicts: social, political & economic perspectives; models of peacebuilding and reconciliation in the social-political context. The program targets university students, pastoral agents, and all those interested in practical and theoretical skills in peacebuilding and strategies towards reconciliation.

Vacancy at International Alert – Consultant: Libya and its Tunisian border

Alert is requesting ‘Expressions of Interest’ from qualified and experienced North Africa specialists for a seven-month research assignment, beginning June 1st 2014. We are looking for someone with an excellent understanding of the Libyan context and knowledge of the challenges facing the border region between Tunisia and Libya. In particular, we are looking for someone with strong research expertise and experience of building relationships with a variety of actors.

Educated to degree level in a relevant subject, you will have proven experience working as a researcher with the ability to deliver high quality results within agreed timeframes. Fluency in Arabic is essential. Fluency in English and French is highly desirable. As the assignment will be based in Tunis, you will need to have the right to work in Tunisia.

Young African Leaders Initiative Expression of Interest Request

As part of President Obama’s Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) Washington Fellowship Program, IREX and USAID invite interested local organizations from Ghana, Kenya, Mozambique, Senegal and South Africa to submit an Expression of Interest statement to partner on the implementation of Africa-based activities supporting the fellows. Launched in 2014, the program brings 500 young leaders aged 25-35 to the United States each year for academic coursework and leadership training. Upon completion of the Fellows’ U.S.-based programming, the program will support and coordinate a range of interconnected Africa-based networking and professional development activities under the USAID-funded Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders program.

Each selected local Implementing Partner organization will engage Washington Fellowship alumni in Africa by playing a key role in developing and implementing youth programming. Local organizations based in Accra, Nairobi, Maputo, Dakar, Pretoria and/or Johannesburg with experience in the following areas are encouraged to submit an Expression of Interest: engaging and supporting youth leaders; developing networks and alliances among the public, private, and civil society sectors; and, managing a wide range of complex activities including internship programs, mentorship programs, and high-profile, large-scale conferences and training programs.

West African Peacebuilding Institute

The West Africa Network for Peacebuilding (WANEP) is one of the leading peacebuilding organizations in Africa. The mandate of WANEP is to build the capacity of peacebuilding, development and human rights practitioners in Africa and worldwide on peace and security issues to promote and protect human security through context specific tools and indigenous techniques.  To fulfil this mandate, WANEP in partnership with the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC), holds each year a four-week course on peacebuilding in Accra, Ghana.
