A Theologian’s Thoughts on God and the Coronavirus

Introductory note by CIHA Blog Editorial Assistant, Bangirana Albert Billy: Considering that Africa and the world are currently grappling with a less known pandemic, academics from various disciplines and notably, some theologians in Africa have begun to bridge perspective and fact. In the following video, CIHA Blog Co-Editor and Professor of Public Theology at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Professor Simanga Kumalo, discusses the interface between God and the Corona-virus.

He advances three schools of thought that are currently defining the discourse on God and the coronavirus pandemic. These include, the Scientists/virologists, the theological thinkers (who include Retributionists & Restorationists), and the Integrationists (who bridge both the scientific and restorationist ideas). He concludes with a view that the Church could in due course be guided by the integrationist strand as it seeks to faithfully provide support to God’s people in this time of need.
