Opportunities: Calls for conference papers

Call for Papers: Extractive Industries in Africa: Addressing Conflicts and Integrating Sustainable Development: 4-5 October 2016

The Hekima Institute of Peace Studies and International Relations (HIPSIR), Hekima University College, Nairobi, Kenya, will be holding a two-day conference on 4-5 October 2016 on resource extraction in Africa with the focus of addressing conflicts and integrating sustainable development. This is in the light of new resource discoveries in the continent and the negative experiences found too often in the past.  The conference will explore the implications of resource extraction on economic development, environmental sustainability, community participation, revenue distribution, transparency, human rights observance, potential and existing community conflicts, legal frameworks and exit strategies. The discussions from the conference will highlight the existing best practices  that give evidence of improvement of quality of life from resource extraction, and the opportunities that the extractive industries create, while equally raising caution on practices that alienate parts of the population, propagate corruption and degrade environment. The outcome of these discussion will be published in a book, HIPSIR’s Africa Peace Studies Journal, and conference proceedings. The recommendations will be useful for policy formulation and implementation as well as for advocacy and inter-stakeholder conflict resolution mechanisms.

Governance Research Program International Conference On Security Regimes in Africa

21-23 September 2016, Bamako, Mali

CODESRIA’s conference on ‘Security regimens in Africa’ posits processes of securitization as regimens that are performed in manifold ways and for which the need, want and desire are, sometimes deliberately created. They are also regimens that can take a multiplicity of forms, that have a diverse set of meanings and that produce a host of effects on society. The ‘problems’ they ‘respond to’ are numerous and changing with causes and manifestations that run from the local and national to the regional and international.  Proceeding from this standpoint the conference seeks to bring together a group of scholars and practitioners to reflect on these processes from multiple disciplinary and methodological standpoints that stand to bring new insights to a much studied area. In the selection process, works that are sensitive to the histories of African countries and societies and that aspire to theoretical innovation while rooted in rigorous empirical research will be privileged.

International Peace Research Association (IPRA) 26th General Conference on “AGENDA FOR PEACE AND DEVELOPMENT”

Freetown, Sierra Leone, 27th November – 1st December 2016

In Collaboration with the 10th Dealing with Disasters Conference Series, Northumbria University, UK and Sakarya University, Turkey

The 26th IPRA General Conference together with the 10th Dealing with Disasters (DwD) Conference intends to help generate interest amongst peace researchers in the global South and North in the way that exploitation of mineral and forestry resources in Sierra Leone and other African, Latin American and Asian countries has caused extensive damage. This is both to the environment and people, not only threatening post-conflict reconstruction efforts but reinforcing structural problems such as poverty. The progress of scholarly activity and its influence through reflection within practice and policy can potentially contribute significantly to the diffusion of this time-bomb to avert future conflicts.
