IDRC Research Awards

As a research award recipient, you will undertake a one-year paid program of research on the topic you submitted to the competition and receive hands-on experience in research management, grant administration, and the creation, dissemination, and use of knowledge from an international perspective.Eligibility: You must be a citizen or permanent resident of Canada, or a citizen of a developing country. You must be currently enrolled at a recognized university at the master’s or doctoral level OR have completed a master’s or doctoral degree at a recognized university. These awards may be part of an academic requirement. Your proposed research must focus on one or more developing countries. Candidates cannot receive any other Canadian government scholarship, award, subsidy, bursary, or honorarium, or hold any federal government contract in support of a research/work project for the duration of the award. If you are a non-Canadian residing, relocating, or studying in Canada and are recommended for an award, you will need a valid work permit before working at IDRC.

Chief of Party, Public International Law & Policy Group, Kenya

PILPG’s Kenya project seeks to build the capacity of civil society organizations, the legal community, and officials within the Government of Kenya (GoK) to provide domestic accountability for election-related violence and politically-motivated human rights abuses.  The project aims to build the ability of these actors to effectively utilize existing accountability mechanisms and increase their knowledge of international standards and comparative state practice on domestic accountability for international crimes.  In addition, PILPG works closely with local partners, including Kenyan lawyers and civil society organizations (CSOs), to coordinate efforts, particularly on activities such as strategic litigation initiatives.  With respect to strategic litigation initiatives, PILPG provides expert advice and guidance during the litigation process, and helps support a network of Kenyan lawyers interested and engaged on public interest litigation.

PILPG is seeking a professional with at least seven years experience in the field of international law, with particular expertise in such matters as transitional justice, litigation, and international human rights to serve as the Chief of Party for its Kenya project. Experience in conflict areas preferred.  The Chief of Party will be based in Nairobi, Kenya.  He or she shall work under the supervision of the Kenya Project Director, who is based in the United States.

Financial Management and Grassroots Reporting Training

The West Africa Civil Society Institute (WACSI) is inviting applications for a 3-day training course in Financial Management and Grants Reporting for civil society organisations (CSOs). WACSI has specifically designed this course to enable CSOs to take effective actions to ensure that their limited resources are used effectively while implementing programmes.

The training will also help to maintain budgetary control in line with an organisation’s financial management procedures. It will look at essential financial management procedures, financial accountability and control mechanisms that are paramount to effective operational management. The course will provide CSOs with effective resource management and build the confidence of CSO staff in managing and reporting on institutional donor grants to meet donors’ financial terms and conditions.

Under its capacity building component, our client’s Somalia and humanitarian Police Section, based in Garowe and Mogadishu have been working to provide the Puntland Police Force (PLPF), and the Somalia Police Force (SPF), with a strong operational foundation in a country that has experienced many years of weak police presence and conflict. The PLPF and the SPG are in dire need of a single, easily recognizable uniform. At the behest of the Government of Puntland and Federal Government of Somalia, a need to augment Police presence and operations throughout Somalia and to provide safety, security, law and order in response to the priorities has been identified. In order to do so, a one-uniform policy has been adopted.

Tomorrow’s Peacebuilders Competition

Peace Direct believes that in every conflict there are local organisations doing remarkable work to prevent violence and build peace. And we should know – since 2004, we have sent over £2 million in funding to dozens of peacebuilding groups across Africa, Asia and Latin America, and we’ve mapped and profiled over 800 more on our website Insight on Conflict. Now, we are launching our second ‘Tomorrow’s Peacebuilders’ competition to find the best emerging peacebuilding organisations across the globe. Four winning entries will be selected by our expert peacebuilding jury. Each winning entry will receive: $4,000 funding for peacebuilding activities; the opportunity to attend an international Peace Direct peacebuilder event or another peacebuilding exchange visit; online promotion of their work.

This is a global competition. There is no geographical restriction on applications. In order to be eligible to enter, you must: be a registered organisation or community association, established for at least 2 years; undertake peacebuilding work – your organisation is either a peacebuilding organisation or has peacebuilding as a substantial element of your work; have a maximum annual income of $60,000 USD or less. At least one of the four winners will have an annual income of less than $10,000 USD; be locally based – your organisation must be based in the country or communities where your work will be done; be an independent organisation, not an in-country or satellite organisation of an international NGO.

Galloway Reporting Fellowship on Human Rights

The Galloway Family Foundation will award three talented reporting fellows the opportunity to work collaboratively under the editorial direction of The GroundTruth Project to carry out a series of human rights-related assignments in Africa to be published on GlobalPost.

The first fellowship is for an international correspondent with no less than three years of experience in writing on Africa for a US news audience — preferably a veteran journalist based in Africa. Two additional fellowships are for local journalists in Africa seeking an opportunity to enlighten and inform a US audience about human rights and social justice issues in Africa. 

A total of $20,000 will be allocated between the three selected follows, who will work together as one team to publish news features, blog posts and one in-depth enterprise or investigative project. The focus of this fellowship is predominantly reporting and writing, but teams are welcome to submit multimedia plans that include photography, video and audio.

Program Director, Uganda, The Grassroots Reconciliation Group

The Grassroots Reconciliation Group (GRG) helps former child soldiers and combatants in war-torn northern Uganda reclaim their future through locally designed projects with the twin aims of reconciliation and small-scale development. Building directly on a previous 3-year USAID reconciliation program, GRG projects bring together former combatants of the rebel Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) and local community members to plan out their own paths to reintegration and reconciliation. This involves a broad range of locally designed interventions, from livelihoods, to trauma support and peace-building activities. By supporting these projects, GRG encourages the long-term social and economic rehabilitation of the war-weary people of northern Uganda. Registered as a 501c3 non-profit organization, GRG has worked with over 1100 people since 2007, and currently works with over 600 people in 12 communities between Gulu and the border with South Sudan. Job Summary: The Program Director (Head of Mission) will have the overall responsibility for implementation of programs in rural communities, as well as financial management, fundraising, and coordination with development partners and the local government.

Requirements Qualifications, Skills & Experience: At least 2-3 years of experience with project management in a developing country (preferably in Sub-Saharan Africa), preferably with a background in conflict resolution and international development; high degree of self-motivation and proven ability to work independently; project management skills, particularly on international development, livelihoods, and peace-building projects; good cross-cultural communication skills; good writing skills; knowledge of sustainable development issues and conflict resolution; grassroots community mobilization experience a plus; knowledge of northern Uganda a plus; excellent networker; proven fundraising experience, in particular on grants; knowledge of multi-media, including web design, blogging, etc. a plus; French a plus
