The just released 2016 Global Go-To Think Tanks Index published by the Lauder Institute of the University of Pennsylvania gives CODESRIA some reason for celebration on this eve of its 44th anniversary. It ranks the Council as the best think tank in Sub-Saharan Africa. This is an improvement on recent years when CODESRIA has generally been ranked 3rd or 4th. The report, which evaluates close to 7000 think tanks worldwide, also rates CODESRIA highly in many other categories. The Council’s work on international development and social policy are acknowledged with rankings as the 18th and 72nd best think tank in these fields worldwide respectively. Our commitment to transdisciplinary research is also acknowledged in our ranking as the 26th best think tank worldwide in that category.
The wisdom in CODESRIA’s insistence on support for basic research in the social sciences and humanities as an effective way of contributing to public policy is positively endorsed by its ranking as the 35th best think tank worldwide for influence on public policy. It is also ranked as having had the 48th best advocacy campaign worldwide.
CODESRIA looks at the report as a reinforcement of the Council’s decision to undertake a wide-ranging process of self-reform that was set in motion in 2014. In the area of communication, it hopes to improve on its ranking as the 40th best think tank worldwide in the use of the Internet. It also hopes to improve its use of print and social media for which it was not even mentioned in the rankings. Also, it hopes to improve its reflections on and contributions to knowledge in the critical areas of health, the environment and science and technology. CODESRIA’s new 5-year program cycle represents an opportunity to leverage the Council’s strengths to cement its position as the leading social science research organization in Africa and as a leading contributor to the broad visions for national, continental and global transformations that are captured in the many documents circulating today.

L’index Global Go-To Think Tanks de 2016 vient d’être publié par l’Institut Lauder de l’Université de la Pennsylvanie donne au CODESRIA des raisons de jubiler à la veille de son 44e anniversaire. Il classe le Conseil comme meilleur laboratoire d’idées en Afrique subsaharienne. Ceci est une amélioration car ces dernières années le CODESRIA occupait généralement la 3e ou 4e place du classement. Le rapport, qui évalue près de 7000 laboratoires d’idées à travers le monde, a également bien évalué le CODESRIA dans d’autres rubriques. Les travaux du Conseil sur le développement et la politique sociale sont mondialement reconnus. Il occupe la 18ème place dans le domaine du développement et est classé 72e meilleurs laboratoires en politique sociale. Notre engagement à la recherche transdisciplinaire est également reconnu à travers la 26e place que nous occupons dans le classement des meilleurs laboratoires d’idées dans le monde dans cette rubrique.
La sagacité du CODESRIA qui met l’accent sur la recherche fondamentale en sciences sociales et humaines pour contribuer de façon efficace à la politique publique, est positivement approuvée par son classement en tant que 35e laboratoire d’idées mondial pour influencer les politiques publiques. Il est également classé 48e meilleure campagne de plaidoyer dans le monde.
Le rapport réconforte le CODESRIA dans la décision du Conseil d’entreprendre un vaste processus d’auto-réforme qui a été lancé en 2014. Dans le domaine de la communication, il espère améliorer son classement comme 40e meilleur laboratoire d’idées dans le monde pour l’utilisation de l’Internet. Il espère également améliorer ses publications sur papier et dans les réseaux sociaux pour lesquels il n’a même pas été mentionné dans le classement. ll espère également améliorer ses réflexions et ses contributions aux connaissances dans les domaines cruciaux tels que la santé, l’environnement, la science et la technologie. Le nouveau programme quinquennal du CODESRIA représente une opportunité de mettre à profit les forces du Conseil pour consolider sa position en tant qu’organisation leader de recherche en sciences sociales en Afrique. Il se positionne également comme un principal collaborateur pour réaliser les grandes visions qui sont décrites de nos jours dans les déclarations de politiques pour des transformations nationales, continentales et mondiales.
Au nom du Comité exécutif et du personnel du CODESRIA, je voudrais remercier tous ceux qui soutiennent le CODESRIA et remercier les autorités du pays qui abrite le secrétariat du CODESRIA au Sénégal pour leur confiance et le soutien. Je voudrais également exhorter la communauté africaine des chercheurs en sciences sociales à continuer de redoubler d’efforts pour faire progresser la recherche africaine et faire avancer la production de connaissances sur notre continent.
