The Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA) was established in 1973 as an independent pan-African research organisation primarily focusing on social sciences research in Africa. It is recognised not only as the pioneer African social research organisation but also as the apex non-governmental centre of social knowledge production on the continent. CODESRIA Day is celebrated annually in February to commemorate the formal founding of the organization. This year, CODESRIA has decided to inaugurate an Annual Lecture Series to commemorate CODESRIA Day. The lecture will be organized as an event open to public participation and will rotate every year to various regions. This year’s inaugural lecture will take place on February 21st in Harare, Zimbabwe. The lecture will be delivered by Prof. Sabelo J. Ndlovu-Gatsheni, Acting Executive Director of Change Management Unit (CMU), Vice-Chancellor’s Office, University of South Africa (UNISA) and the title of the lecture is “The Struggles for Epistemic Freedom in Africa.” In his lecture, Prof. Ndlovu-Gatsheni will speak to the struggle for epistemic freedom in Africa while also reflecting on the contributions of CODESRIA to this struggle. CODESRIA DAY LECTURE: The Struggles for Epistemic Freedom in Africa

February is a special month for CODESRIA. This is the month when CODESRIA was formally founded as a Council. In recent times, the Council has observed February 1st to celebrate its birthday by hosting an event held at its headquarters in Dakar, Senegal. During the event, members and colleagues present in Dakar enjoy energising intellectual engagement convened at the Council. The event is often linked to a broad-based engagement with the public through media interviews. In 2018, however, CODESRIA will inaugurate an Annual Lecture Series to commemorate CODESRIA Day. This will be called CODESRIA Day Lecture. The venue for the lecture and the lecturer will be decided upon at the end of every preceding year during the Annual Programming Seminar so that preparations commence for the lecture in advance of February.
The Council will ensure that the lecture constitutes a significant part of the annual engagement planned with participants in the Methodology and Scholarly Writing Workshop to be jointly organised by our Research and Training, Grants and Fellowships Programmes. We expect that the Workshop will bring together up to 70 participants selected for the Meaning-Making Research Initiative (MRI) Grant. The lecture will be organized as an event open to public participation. Given that the Methodology and Scholarly Writing Workshop will rotate over the years in the regions of the continent, CODESRIA Day Lecture will similarly rotate to the regions. We plan that the Lecturer will visit two other CODESRIA regions to deliver a similar or related Lecture organised jointly with a university or research centre in the selected region.
This way of approaching the CODESRIA Day has several significant advantages. First, it enables a more pan-African engagement precisely because the lecture rotates in regions. Second, the lecture will speak directly to the historic mandate of CODESRIA thereby contributing to enhancing the pan-African profile of the Council. Third, the lecture will be published as a lead article in Africa Development so as to provoke wider debate beyond the forum of its presentation. Four, the lecture will be associated with a membership mobilisation process that the Council has now committed to undertake annually. The aim is to get new and paid up members and also sensitise the community about CODESRIA’s annual Work Plan which will have been approved by the Executive Committee in December of the preceding year. Finally, we will, in due course, align this lecture to the proposed Reflection on Policy Series, a Series that will convene academics and policy actors to reflect on key findings out of the Council’s basic research output and to jointly speak to significant policy implications out of this research for the continent. Ultimately, the Council will deliberately align the CODESRIA Day Lecture to plans towards the 50th Anniversary that will be celebrated in 2023.
Plans for the CODESRIA Day Lecture for 2018 are at an advanced stage. The lecture will be delivered by Prof. Sabelo J. Ndlovu-Gatsheni, Acting Executive Director of Change Management Unit (CMU), Vice-Chancellor’s Office, University of South Africa (UNISA). It will be held on 21st February on the back of the Methodology and Scholarly Writing Workshop organised for the winning proposals for the MRI Grant in Harare, Zimbabwe. The title of the lecture is “The Struggles for Epistemic Freedom in Africa.” In his lecture, Prof. Ndlovu-Gatsheni will speak to the struggle for epistemic freedom in Africa while also reflecting on the contributions of CODESRIA to this struggle. The lecture will draw from his soon to be published book entitled ’Epistemic Freedom in Africa: Deprovincialization and Decolonization (Routledge). CONFÉRENCE DE LA JOURNÉE DU CODESRIA : Les luttes pour la liberté épistémique en Afrique

Février est un mois spécial pour le CODESRIA. C’est pendant ce mois que le CODESRIA a été officiellement créé. Ces dernières années, le Conseil a commémoré le 1er février et célébré son anniversaire par un événement organisé à son siège à Dakar, au Sénégal. Pendant cet événement, membres et collègues présents à Dakar bénéficient d’un engagement intellectuel énergisant stimulant. L’évènement est souvent étendu au public par le biais d’entrevues avec les médias. En 2018, cependant, le CODESRIA inaugure une série de conférences annuelles pour commémorer cette Journée. Le lieu de la conférence et le nom du conférencier seront décidés à la fin de chaque année au cours du séminaire annuel de programmation afin que les préparatifs démarrent à temps.
Le Conseil veillera à ce que la conférence constitue une part importante du plan d’engagement annuel défini avec les participants à l’Atelier de méthodologie et d’écriture scientifique organisé conjointement par nos Programmes Recherche et Formation, bourses et subventions. L’atelier devrait réunir près de 70 participants sélectionnés dans le cadre de l’Initiative de construction du sens (MRI). La conférence sera ouverte à la participation du public. Étant donné que l’Atelier de méthodologie et d’écriture scientifique sera organisé successivement dans les régions du continent, la conférence de la Journée du CODESRIA suivra cette même rotation dans les régions. Nous prévoyons que le conférencier visite deux autres régions du CODESRIA dans le cadre d’une conférence similaire ou connexe organisée conjointement avec une université ou un centre de recherche dans les régions sélectionnées.
Cette manière d’aborder la Journée du CODESRIA présente plusieurs avantages significatifs. Premièrement, elle permet un engagement plus panafricain précisément parce que la conférence est organisée, à tour de rôle, dans les régions. En second lieu, la Conférence s’articulera directement au mandat historique du CODESRIA contribuant ainsi à l’amélioration de la dimension panafricaine du Conseil. Troisièmement, la conférence sera publiée comme article dans la revue Afrique et Développement afin de susciter un débat plus large, au-delà du forum de sa présentation.
Quatrièmement, la Conférence sera associée à un processus de mobilisation des membres que le Conseil s’est engagé à entreprendre annuellement. L’objectif est d’intéresser de nouveaux membres et sensibiliser la communauté du CODESRIA au Plan de travail annuel qui aura été approuvé par le Comité exécutif en décembre de l’année précédente. Enfin, nous alignerons cette conférence sur la série Réflexions sur les politiques proposée, série qui convoquera universitaires et acteurs politiques pour une réflexion sur les principales conclusions des résultats de la recherche fondamentale du Conseil et pour échanger sur les implications politiques importantes de cette recherche pour le continent. En fin de compte, le Conseil alignera, de manière délibérée la Série de conférences de la Journée du CODESRIA sur les célébrations du 50ème anniversaire qui aura lieu en 2023.
Les préparations de la Conférence de la journée du CODESRIA 2018 sont à un stade avancé. La conférence sera donnée par le Professeur Sabelo J. Ndlovu- Gatsheni, Directeur exécutif par intérim de l’Unité de gestion du changement (CMU), Bureau du Recteur de l’Université d’Afrique du Sud (UNISA). Elle se tiendra le 21 février 2018 à Harare (Zimbabwe), en marge de l’Atelier de méthodologie et d’écriture scientifique organisé à l’attention des propositions de recherche sélectionnées dans le cadre de l’Initiative de recherche de construction du sens. Le titre de la conférence est « Les luttes pour la liberté épistémique en Afrique. » Dans sa communication, le Professeur Ndlovu- Gatsheni abordera la lutte pour la liberté épistémique en Afrique et les contributions du CODESRIA à cette lutte. La conférence s’inspirera de son prochain ouvrage intitulé Epistemic Freedom in Africa : Deprovincialization and Decolonization (Routledge).
